Pain Management Center In The Department of Anesthesia

Clinical Pain Fellowship Application

A Message From The Chief

Thank you for your interest in the Stanford Pain Management Fellowship.
I want to highlight a few features of the program. As you consider our program I hope you will find that we provide a comprehensive approach to the management of acute, chronic and cancer pain management in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. If you have not already reviewed the information regarding our exciting new clinical facilities at the Stanford Medicine Outpatient Center in Redwood City, I encourage you to do so.

We are honored to be recognized as a Clinical Center of Excellence by the American Pain Society. This award is a recognition and validation of the interdisciplinary model of pain management exemplified by the Stanford Pain Center.

Fellows currently rotate in a variety of clinical settings including the Stanford Outpatient Clinic, acute inpatient ward rotation, outpatient procedures, the Palo Alto Veterans’ Administration Hospital, and the Lucile Salter-Packard Children’s Pediatric Pain Service. Additional exposure to other practice settings through the efforts of our voluntary clinical faculty is also available. Throughout these rotations, a fundamental philosophy encompassing a comprehensive approach to the patient is pervasive. Fundamentally, appropriate diagnoses must be obtained in order to provide appropriate therapeutic options. An emphasis on functional rehabilitation in all settings allows the appropriate use of medical, procedural, rehabilitative and psychological interventions to be appropriately tailored to individual patient needs. The role of the pain management specialist as a consultant to the other medical specialties is emphasized. There is however, an opportunity for primary management of pain patients in our inpatient Med-Behavioral Unit where our most complex patients are managed by the fellows during the inpatient rotation.

From a procedural standpoint, the fellows participate three days per week in our procedural rotation including all the basic neural blockades. In addition, the surgical techniques of spinal cord stimulation and intrathecal pump placement are within the scope of practice in the Pain Management Center. Opportunities exist for the fellows to become competent in the variety of procedures appropriate for the practice of comprehensive pain management.

Academically, the fellows participate in the regular education sessions of the service including Grand Rounds and M & M conferences. During the course of the year, fellows will be asked to present in these various conferences to supplement their clinical education. The opportunity for scholarly activities exists and is an expectation of the fellowship. Coordination with the Director of Pain Research allows appropriate integration with the academic activities of the division.
